Seasons Way
The Art of
Shelah Dow

I remember when I was a child I heard about this wonderful plastic that you could make your own dolls from. Back then, I was in Barbie mode and thought that sounded neat, but unbelievable.  As an adult, I discovered polymer clay and used it to create well loved dragon beads that I sold on Ebay as well as dragon sculptures and other oddball things. I dreamed of making dolls. I collected doll images and links just to drool over and thought I would never be able to accomplish this sort of thing.  Over seven years ago I tried my first dolls and they were horrible.  In January, I decided that I would pursue what I loved once more.  I joined doll groups, learned how to build armatures and the better clays to use.  I rebuilt my collection of supplies and blended my old polymer clay knowledge with the new information about doll making.  I recently gave up the frustration in not making 'realistic' dolls in realizing that I loved the unrealistic fantasy creations I made far more than if I had been creating perfection in humanoid fairy form.  I spent the last seven years painting watercolors in fantasy theme, but now only manage a painting once in awhile. Dolls are the passion, like rediscovering a loved one from long ago. There is pleasure found in putting on the perfect hair, sewing the sweetest dress, glueing myself to a pair of wings a few times as I craft the perfect accent for a beauty in progress.  There's pleasure in this that goes beyond what watercolors can give.

My website is becoming more and more doll obsessed as I create.
