Twilight Faerie Wings
By Paula Johnson

I came up with the idea for these wings while I was making tail fins for a mermaid. The result is
the Twilight Faery with her fancy glistening wings.
All you need for this project is:
• sheer polyester type fabric such as sparkling organza
• white cloth covered wire (floral wire) no smaller than 26 gauge (comes in packages cut in
18” lengths)
• tacky glue
• wax paper
• large, heavy book
• ultra fine point permanent marker - black
• candle (to singe the wing edges)
Note: wing template may be enlarged or reduced in size to make the wings fit any doll.

Cut two sheets of wax paper and one piece of the sheer fabric to about the same size of the wax
paper.

Place fabric on top of one sheet wax paper, set the other piece of paper aside, and trace around
the wing template four times, to make four wings (see photo for placement). Use the fine point
marker for this.

Place four (18”) wires on the template with about 1” sticking out over the tip of the wing and
mark, with a pencil, where each end of the template is on the wires.

You will place a bead of glue on the wire between the marks. Place the glued side of the wire on
the wing fabric, one wire on each wing. Place the remaining sheet of wax paper over the freshly
glued wings then top with a large heavy book to hold everything in place while drying.

When glue is dry gently peel the wax paper from each side of the wings. Cut the wings out and
make ¼” snips one inch apart all around the edges of wings with scissors.
WARNING: Be very careful on the next step!!! Place your candle on a dining table, away from
curtains and other flammable objects. Have a large bowl of cold water available next to you; turn
off ceiling fans to help keep your flame steady. Do not put the fabric directly in the flame of the
candle; it melts just fine about two inches above the flame...

Singe the edges of the wings just so they curl a little.

Put two wings together and twist the long wire ends together and cut wire to 1 ¼”.

Bend the tips of wire back.

Curl the wing tips up on a pencil then if wish stick a bead on the end of the wire.

Bend tip of wire back to keep bead in place.

Crimp the wings in a zigzag pattern.

Then lightly pull at the wing tips to “loosen” the crimp a little.

The wings are now ready to place on your doll.

To place the wings on a cloth doll snip a small hole in each “shoulder blade” area of the dolls
back. Place a drop or two of fabri-tac glue on the wing wire and insert into the hole on dolls
back, slipping the wire down on inside between the fabric and stuffing.
